Dog Days

Why are these hot summer days referred to as the 'Dog Days'?

a. it's so hot out that even a dog can't take the heat

b. a star stood out that looked like a dog's nose

c. people walk around panting like a dog because of the heat

d. ancient people used to look up at the night sky and howl in July

Ready?  The star, Sirius, looks like it's rising before the sun does at this time of year (Sirius being the part of the constellation Canis Major). So the correct answer is 'b'.  Ancient Greeks dubbed Sirius the 'dog star', and, in late July, it looked like the aforementioned constellation was 'chasing' a hare (the constellation 'Lepus').

Meanwhile, down here in Texas, many of us are having a tough time with the persistent heat and do find ourselves panting.  With quickly banished thoughts of 'I can't take another Texas summer!' and daily fantasies of jumping into Barton Springs, there are a few things that can be done to make our conditions more tolerable:

Slow down.  If you think about it, there's just a whole lot more sauntering as pedestrians pace themselves to get from Point A to Point B.  Notice it sometime-from the inside of your well-air-conditioned car, of course.  It's important not to let your body's core overheat.

Drink water.  A LOT of water. The rule of thumb about drinking 8 glasses of water a day doesn't apply when there's heavy perspiration going on.  Realize salt is also being excreted, so include enough (in accordance with your medical doctor's guidelines, of course).

Do thorough preemptive care.  Getting adjusted regularly is integral to maintaining a healthy body.  By the time you have noticeable symptoms, you've already created an unhealthy situation.  Receiving consistent chiropractic care allows the nervous system to communicate effectively, which helps to keep you functioning.
